Viewing Notes

Finally crossed this off the list… didn’t realize this was already 2 years old! Seriously thought it came out last year. Overall, it’s not very good. Was disappointed at how bland this is given all the actors involved but then again this is a Disney IP so it plays safe in nearly every aspect. Makes sense as to how this bombed in China; the epic movies similar to this they’ve seen many times and usually have some teeth to them. This is a very paint-by-the-numbers hero journey tale that rushes thru all the story beats to get to its obvious conclusion. All the bad reviews and reactions is one of the reasons I never bothered to get to this sooner (and now I recall I was also in the midst of packing and movie when this hit Disney+).

All that said, it would’ve been nice to see this on the big screen, which it was clearly made for and does look nice. Some of the casting feels like stunt casting or “would love to have that actor in my movie” stuff. Like Cheng Pei-Pei bc she portrayed characters like Mulan early in her career so let’s get her in the movie in a silly role. But it was fine. The other big one was probably Jet Li who likely just accepted bc it was Disney and he was paid well enough to retire again. Donnie Yen was probably a legit choice having already participated w/Rogue One but here he looks like he’s between his own projects and going thru the motions. It’s amusing that Jason Scott Lee is kinda doing his villain from CTHD 2. Gong Li is fine.

Weird that this movie is there and doesn’t try to do anything interesting or different. So bland that I cannot imagine ever viewing this again, which is a shame.
