Viewing Notes

For my Yuen Woo-ping project, one of my absolute favorite HK movies and probably the one I’ve seen the most of his. Features babyfaced Wu Jing as the mischievous hero wooing Christy Chung’s rebel w/a cause with Darren Shahlavi (RIP) as the big bad. I love all the action, romance and humor.

When I got this DVD back in ‘00 or ‘01 back when I was buying up a lot of HK films on eBay, I watched this one many times bc it is so entertaining and hits all the right notes. Plus I hadn’t seen action quite like that and it blew my mind. This was before I watched a shit ton more HK action films. Most of my viewing was limited to Jackie Chan films and old Kung Fu Theater flicks, all great in their own way but not like what Yuen Woo-ping was doing.

I probably saw Drunken Master at some point prior to this movie but that was early Woo-ping before he really established his style we’d see in his 80s and 90s films. So this or maybe Iron Monkey were the first Woo-ping movies I had seen. And this one definitely needs a nice new release with the restoration treatment for all the reasons mentioned.
