Viewing Notes

This really is a live action anime. Basically Ninja Scroll but not quite as fantastical. Can’t believe I’ve owned for this 15 years and never watched it until now. Had I been more alert I would’ve brought this DVD for Shusuke Kaneko to sign (in addition to my Gamera set) when I met him. Plus asked him about making this movie, which is very entertaining. If he returns to G-Fest I will absolutely ask him.

This sequel probably gets dinged for that lackluster ending given all the action leading up to it. The battle between Azumi and Earth Spider (Tak Sakaguchi) is the best but I am a little biased. Love that both he and Kenichi Endo return for the sequel as completely different characters. Chiaki Kuriyama really got typecast as the bad girl, didn’t she? I like Aya Ueto as Azumi and they really should’ve made a couple more sequels esp. after the tease at the end of this movie. I’m glad she’s still acting; she’s great carrying these movies.

I shouldn’t be surprised that neither of these have been released on Blu-ray, to my knowledge. But I’d love to be wrong so I could upgrade.
