Had this one earmarked for my Jet Li project. To my luck found the Blu-ray at a pawn shop while visiting Rapid City. Given when this was released I’m surprised I had never seen this until now esp. since it co-stars Statham. Not sure how I missed it at the theater (I assume it was in theaters) since I totally went to see genre films like this.
This is an odd mashup of FACE/OFF and Yojimbo with a lot of the usual yakuza vs Triads tropes. On paper this probably sounded great but the execution is merely so-so. And as the story unfolds the character motivations really don’t make sense. A better director probably could’ve made this more engaging. Really they just should’ve handed it over to Corey Yuen to direct since he was there supervising the action work.
