A heroic tale of three blood brothers and their struggle in the midst of war and political upheaval. It is based on “The Assassination of Ma,” a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) story about the killing of general Ma Xinyi.

Owned this Blu-ray for a very long time but haven’t had the desire to view this movie. Doing a Jet Li project this year has finally got it into my eyeballs (in the final month of the year no less). It’s about what I expected, a dour retelling of this General’s conquests and ultimately his demise. As soon as the trio make the blood pact in the beginning you know where this is headed and the conflict that will ensue.
Certainly a well made film that unfortunately evokes little happiness between the story and color palette of dreary gray and muddy browns. That’s the intent as this really is not a happy story as the title of the source material indicates but two hours of this is a lot. I like all these leads just not crazy about Jet in this role where he is meant to be unlikeable. I know he wanted to flex his acting skills at this time having retired from wushu films.
