Big Shots Die at Dawn (1961)

Directed by Kihachi Okamoto

Crime | Mystery | Film Noir

Overview

An early Okamoto yakuza film, though it’s not in the Underworld series (along with The Last Gunfight and The Big Boss) despite being alternatively known as “Death of the Boss.” While Okamoto did not write this film and took on the project because he was assigned and “just doing [his] job” according to an interview with Chris Desjardins in Outlaw Masters of Japanese Film, he did express a general excitement about working in action cinema (which shows through in this film’s energy.)

Length 97 minutes

Viewing Notes

Part of the Titans is Toho Birthday Marathon over the final weekend of 2022 into 2023. This one was selected bc it features Kumi Mizuno in a nice supporting role. This shitty ass TMDb description doesn’t share the plot so allow me:

Grown up son arrives home to learn his father, the newly elected mayor, has been assassinated. So he journeys down a path to find the assassin and gets involved with two opposing yakuza gangs. This is a really good JP film noir but in color and definitely deserves a decent release.
