Viewing Notes

Some neat things in here but wow is this screenplay overwrought. Needs one or two less sub-plots. I like Steven C. Miller and enjoyed the making-of featurette more than the movie but wish he had found a way to make this a little more leaner to go with the meaner aspect of the story. Great imagery around Cincinnati and the bank robbers.

Couldn’t find anything online to suggest this was set earlier than its release date of 2016 but I was obsessed with all the old tech used especially the old cellphones! All flip phones and candy bars; not one smartphone! In 2016!! Wait. Did Wells (Grenier) have a smartphone?! This is what I focus on when the movie isn’t good. Wondered if it had been produced way earlier than 2016 but nope it started production in September 2015.

Meloni is good hamming it up as the gritty FBI agent but Willis just seems like he’s just there chilling but not terrible. I like Bautista here even if he doesn’t get anything to do until the end.

Also, another reminder that Dave Bautista cut his teeth on movies like this where he’s a supporting character w/only a handful of lines. He even talks about that in the featurette. Always see comments get pushed into my TL with this “Look at Dave Bautista making all the right acting choices. Be more like him, Dwayne Johnson.” And it’s always pics from BR2049 and Dune or GOTG. Come on, the dude’s been in plenty of b-movies (and that’s awesome) so he just didn’t fall into critical or universally loved roles. And this movie comes after GOTG and before MASTER Z where he’s a super cheesy character.
