Had to revisit this after viewing BULLITT for the first time. A bit of overlap in the SF locations that I wanted to see again (basically creating a checklist of places I want to visit on my next trip to SF). Also wanted to revisit after seeing Kim Novak in that silly Boys’ Night Out a couple days ago.
Something that occurred to me during this viewing is how much I love this movie despite my absolute hatred for the main character. I like Jimmy Stewart in nearly everything I’ve seen of him but cannot tolerate this character. So cringe and skeevy and annoying and and and ... but I realized he has a mental illness and it’s exacerbated by the trauma having witnessed the apparent suicide of the woman he fell in love with. I guess that aspect somehow allows me to makes sense of this being an all-time favorite.
I added to my January Giallo event bc this film likely inspired Mario Bava, esp. the lurid Technicolor and blurry visages of a woman being stalked. So visually gorgeous. Add in the mystery murder component and boom. Seriously if Sergio Martino directed this in 1972 Rome it would be 100 percent giallo. I could watch this movie once a month and probably not tire of it… tho I would be so angry at Stewart’s character.
