Perfect time to revisit this… after it just swept all the main awards it was nominated for. Incredible achievement especially for a movie this gd weird. Definitely had tears when Ke Huy Quan won then JLC right after him. Big messy face tears when Michelle Yeoh won bc I honestly thought Cate was gonna take the best actress Oscar. Didn’t even care if the film was gonna win best picture but it did. Amazing to see it all unfold.
After this viewing I agree that JLC wasn’t nearly as good as Stephanie Hsu who is fucking top level excellent. But I’m okay with JLC winning for her career and getting that recognition. Stephanie will hopefully get many more opportunities to showcase her talent. But holy shit is she great in this film and probably my second favorite thing after Ke Huy Quan.
Altho this wasn’t my favorite movie of 2022 it is still a very good and entertaining viewing. James Hong has some wonderful little moments, too. The entire movie is full of wonderful little moments and interactions. Ke Huy Quan is so good I’m still in disbelief that he hasn’t done anything in front of the camera for 20 years. All that wasted time for this talent.
Already knew how great Michelle Yeoh was so no surprises here but I do still love that she had to portray an asshole and made it believable then gets a redemption arc.
