Would’ve guessed this was a 1990s film bc of the look and style and story. Clearly it influenced 90s and 00s J-cinema; so many things seen in this we’ve seen in dozens of films during that time. Quite astonishing to find an earlier example.
The film fucking rocks. A futuristic Japan riddled with gangs and cop corruption and eccentric mob bosses like Lady Hibari with tough as nails young women like Asuka trying to bring it all down. The leader of the girl gang Yoko is a looker and seemed familiar. She’s been in several films since including a stint as Zero Woman.
The entire time I wondered how a movie this good still hasn’t gotten picked up by Arrow or Third Window. Then a Rolling Stones tune plays… ugh. Honestly, just switch out the songs. It would have little to no impact on the story and overall film. Really sad this is the only way to experience this amazing movie.
After the movie Josef programmed the episode of Hana no Asuka-gumi! tv series that features this Asuka going back in time to meet her grandmother Asuka. It’s a wild episode but so great to watch after the movie.
