Overview

McCall believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when he meets Teri, a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by – he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.

Viewing Notes

Prepping for the third film out this week. Man, I love this movie and how balanced it is between the drama and action. Organically develops the characters and gives purpose to how things unfold. So crazy that CGM is the thrust of the story then she vanishes for the entire movie until the end. Forgot that Haley Bennett is in this and she’s fine but couldn’t they just get a Russian actress for that part?

Amusing that Marton Csokas has made a career by being the perfect bad guy. So good in this. Funny to see David Harbour here who wasn’t a big thing back in 2014 but he’s good, too. My only nitpick is that McCall could’ve easily taken out Tait Fletcher in the hardware store rather than do that rough and tumble fight but of course that is more thrilling than just shooting him in the head quickly.

The entire Home Depot setpiece is so excellent and a clever way to show Teddy isn’t that smart bc he’s now brought McCall to the ideal place to take out a squad of mercs. Love it so much.

I need to watch more of Fuqua’s work. Maybe a project for next year?
