Viewing Notes
I don’t even know where to begin. Got tired of waiting for new release so I dug out my Tai Seng dvd. Not a great presentation but watchable and with Cantonese language track. It’s crazy how identifiable nineties HK films are based on their visual look, which I’ve noted on so many films from this decade. Whether it’s contemporary or period, the lighting and colors and angles and general smoky hazy appearance is the same.
Still blows my mind that Johnnie To directed this, what is basically a live action cartoon. Just bananas filmmaking with no concern for logic or gravity or rules of physics. Incredible.
All three women are terrific with their own moments to shine. I was sad all over again for Anita taken away from us all too soon after becoming the brightest star. She is the main hero that brings the other two together.
This is certainly one film that deserves a huge release loaded with extras. It’s disappointing we haven’t gotten one given all the other titles that have. I want to believe there is a very good reason for this.
All the way to the end this movie doesn’t follow its own rules: Wonder Woman’s cop husband is interviewed standing up after rescuing the babies and calls the heroines “The Heroic Trio” after just being in the hospital and told by his wife he won’t be able to walk for six months if he’s lucky. Because nothing matters except these women kicking ass!
