Viewing Notes

Remembered that I owned this on Blu from a previous Criterion sale and it’s perfect for Moarvember Mysteries. The mystery is who kidnapped the child, which is the premise of the movie, a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation. Really good stuff all around. Starts with the kidnapping thriller then moves into the procedural mystery.

Gotta wonder if Kurosawa was just being kind to his friends and throwing them bone by giving them small parts with only a line or two. Longtime Kurosawa actors Takashi Shimura and Susumu Fujita are present here just to be present, I guess? So weird to see two great actors just sit there and do nothing. So maybe it was a way to get them a paycheck.
