Long overdue revisit and a perfect film for Moarvember Mysteries. Definitely appreciated it a lot more on this watch. Fincher was operating on another level delivering a mashup of detective / procedural tropes that creates his own thing that’s been emulated 100x since. There’s a few minor things that bug me but otherwise a riveting tale and really got to me especially that final sequence.
Amusing that the movie opens with NIN and closes with Bowie ‘95 who both toured together that year (saw that show twice). The constant rain in Los Angeles is hilarious given how rarely it rains. It really looks like an east coast city for a lot of the film. But that rain and overall grimy look made me wonder if this movie was an influence on LIMBO. So similar in many ways.
Anyways this is a fucking banger and really messed me up watching it.
RIP Richard Roundtree
