Being Dec 7, DKUTV programmed a couple of war movies that focused on the attack at Pearl Harbor. This was the first and the second was Tora! Tora! Tora! which I own on DVD. I wanted to watch this Japanese film as I don’t think there’s another way to view it tho it could be on Archive.org but I didn’t look.
Anyway, this is fascinating film to watch after Godzilla Minus One. The first part of the movie is all the training these young men go thru before being assigned. There’s a specific scene where each naval cadet pledges to obey all orders without question. The way it’s phrased is chilling and I wished I could’ve paused the film to get a screen snap. Really adds to the plot device in GMO of how intense that remorse and survivor guilt really is for Koichi.
The other extremely interesting aspect is that this was produced during the war, early even, before any real outcome was in sight. To see the Japanese revel in the PH attack and be so confident about winning the war is wild. Kurosawa regular Susumu Fujita is one of the commanders.
