Despite the advent of science, literature, technology, philosophy, religion, and so on—none of these has assuaged humankind from killing one another, the animals, and nature. UNITY is a film about why we can’t seem to get along, even after thousands and thousands of years.

Been eyeing this documentary for a while bc of the insane cast of narrators they assembled. If this was for a narrative feature film it would be like a gonzo Around the World in 80 Days type of thing. Sadly it’s not. Instead it’s a very charged position on humanity coexisting with the natural world. I don’t know anything about the production but given the talent I’m guessing this was partly funded by PETA and other Vegan organizations.
The opening scene is a horrific long clip of steer being led to slaughter and trying to escape. It’s sickening and I had to turn away but yeah we get it. So trigger warning for what’s about to come bc there’s more similar clips.
I know some of the actors involved are PETA supporters so no surprise there but I wonder about others if they even watched this movie (there is a disclaimer upfront indicating that not everyone was in agreement with all the segments).
For a documentary it’s not insightful or presenting anything new. This is for the general audiences that need to be spoonfed these concepts not unlike those glued to Fox News all day. My reaction for most of the film was “no shit!” Really the only thing keeping engaged was guessing who all the voices were and I was correct for a lot of them. Also, we already lost a few of these folks (eerie to hear Anton Yelchin’s voice). So I guess I give this a point bump for that since I did watch the whole thing.
