Much better than expected given the premise. Solid dramedy with everyone committed to the story with some quality humor (I laughed a few times). Cast is great especially Alan Arkin who seemed to be reprising his character from Freebie & the Bean. A lot of heart despite the absurdity of the plot. Can’t even imagine how dangerous it would be to put two people in the ring at their ages (De Niro was 70 and Stallone 67 during the year of release). That was on my mind often during the training and boxing scenes which kept me from fully enjoying the film. Even if I trained for a year I wouldn’t be able to do what they do but hey that’s movie magic right?
Nice seeing Kim Basinger again. She has good chemistry with Stallone. Also amusing how they apparently use some b roll or outtakes from their old boxing movies for the intro. At least that’s what it looks like. Curious if that’s how it was pitched to them.
