First time viewing! Uncertain if this is from a novel but the stylized dialogue feels taken directly from the pages of a book. Certainly has a neo-noirish feel to it. Fun ensemble cast but Lucy Liu is the best. She’s so good here in yet another thankless role. Hollywood really did her a disservice.
Dawned on me that this is basically an American take on those early Guy Ritchie films, Lock Stock and Snatch. The storytelling, flashbacks, dialogue, goons, hitmen, and crime bosses pitted against each other. And the gambling ofc. Wouldn’t mind owning this one.
I was late and missed the intro but when the film started I knew we were not watching the 35mm print as advertised, which is fine bc I wanted to see the film regardless. So afterwards I asked one the other olds that attends (he sits a few rows behind me) what the story was. He said it was some other BS tale of the owners of the print not being able to find it and finished by saying, “there’s always a story isn’t there?! Haha”
Basically the 35mm really means nothing anymore and just expect a DCP.
