Could make a case for a higher rating bc all the right ingredients are here. However, it’s just so neutered and edited down to the microsecond. too slick and safe and clean to really register as anything more than it being fine. Disappointing bc in the hands of the right director (and without the oversight of China) this could’ve been a fun genre flick. All the actors fit the parts including Collin Chou typecast as the big bad once again (and still has his fighting chops).
Also this appears to take place in the same fictional city of those other recent films, the tropical locale that doesn’t look like anything especially China. Besides everyone being wealthy and driving pristine $200k sports cars, the quick cuts to end each scene are rather annoying. Some scenes need that extra beat or two to breathe and make an impact. Here? Nope. Cutting that fucker as soon as we can to show the next scene. So weird.
Vicky Zhao shows up in a cameo as “Agent Zhao” which is hilarious and right before she was blacklisted and erased from Chinese history. Such a bizarre story.
