Viewing Notes

Back when I saw LUCKY NUMBER SLEVIN I noted that hollywood done did Lucy Liu dirty. Case in point this movie. Now I am here to say that this isn’t nearly the stinker that generated the negative headlines, bad press and razzies 20+ years ago. It has plenty of cool stuff going for it, namely Lucy Liu being a total badass.

What it doesn’t have is a coherent story and competent script. That’s unfortunate bc they put some money into this. Those huge stunts and explosions wouldn’t even happen in most movies today. They are always neat to see bc they are real despite being preposterous in most cases. So the movie is half good… which also means half bad. Sucks because this is a solid cast and there is an interesting story tucked in there. tbh it’s surprising they gave this first time (for Hollywood) director this gig. ofc he wouldn’t direct again for 12 years.

Despite all the shitpiling Antonio Banderas walked away mostly unscathed. Lucy did have some decent projects following this but was mostly relegated to voice work and B-movies. It’s crazy that Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill were her two biggest films since. I don’t count Kung Fu Panda bc that was voice work but def a steady gig. She did get her own show in Elementary but hasn’t really gotten any big movie opportunities. ofc it could all be her choice but I doubt she would purposely select projects no one has heard about over any large productions. Anyways, I’m just sad that Lucy wasn’t a bigger star bc she has the talent and presence. And she’s the best thing in this movie.
