Viewing Notes

the latest Yimou Zhang won me over by the end. I was on the fence during the first half of this police procedural / family drama but it pulls it together in the second half and I was fully on board. Very sneaky and very Zhang-like.

The overlap character is Han Ming (Lei Jiayin) who works for the department investigating a rape case / assault w/a partner he dated in college. He’s also the father of a teenager that gets involved in a bullying situation at school (he punched a bully). So the movie is constantly flipping back and forth between these two stories making it a challenge to really be invested in either (there’s so much banter, arguing and discussions it’s dizzying at times).

It does get a bit (a lot) schmaltzy at the end esp. the dramatic music crescendo. It’s kinda ridiculous but yeah I get it and the point it’s trying to make.  The ratings are not great for this Zhang film and I can understand why some would be put off by this story; it’s not his usual fare and not easy to get on board. But much like his other films even if I enjoyed them on the first watch, they often really clicked with me on the second viewing. SHADOW was that way. FLYING DAGGERS was that way. It is wild to see a modern drama directed by him.
