Overview

Ella Blake, a stop-motion animator struggling to control her demons after the loss of her overbearing mother, embarks upon the creation of a film that becomes the battleground for her sanity. As Ella’s mind starts to fracture, the characters in her project take on a life of their own.

Viewing Notes

This was the third film in my triple feature at Promenade and an unfortunate evening showing. I say unfortunate bc AMC only programmed one screening for this movie at 7pm in one of the small theaters. So ofc it was packed and I had a trio of young ppl right next to me who brought noisy snacks that they ate for the entire runtime (it’s a mostly quiet movie which made it worse). The ppl in the row in front of me brought in smelly outside food that was so pungent that I held up my jacket over my nose for half the duration. I was so distracted and annoyed I wanted to walk out. Ofc I didn’t and wouldn’t but I really wanted to.

My rating is reflective of that experience, sadly. There’s so much cool shit in this movie but it was difficult to focus on it and how it was unfolding in this downward spiral of a story. I look forward to revisiting when it hits Shudder. Maybe we can watch in the Secret Cinema bc the sound design (the foley work = chef’s kiss) sounded pretty darn cool from what I could hear in that shitty theater.

Best way to describe this is if the TOOL stop motion video (“Sober”) became real and turned into body horror. The vibe reminded me of CENSOR. If this gets a physical release, I’d buy it.
