Viewing Notes
Already by the second film this feels episodic. And feels slightly smaller than the previous film with only a few contained sets and outdoor scenes. But I may like this one a little more bc it really gets to the action beats with the story unfolding between each attack. Also, this is really where I believe he has some kind of sixth sense / superpowers bc he’s so good and so fast. I actually paused and rewound a couple of scenes bc I could not believe how fast Katsu wields that sword to take out his opponents.
Cool story, too. Figured Wakayama would make an appearance in the series but didn’t expect him so soon. And, ofc, he’s great and mesmerizing on screen. Love the comfort women being introduced and how Zatoichi sympathizes and easily befriends them. The very unusual (for its time) subplot of the Lord being gay and having to keep it secret was a surprise (Zatoichi is hired to give him a massage and learns of this so he’s targeted to be killed to keep it a secret).
