Viewing Notes

Figured I’d follow an American western with an interpretation of one, a movie I’ve wanted to revisit for long time. Such an unusual project even for Miike. So many influences and homages thrown into a blender for a result that is less than its ingredients.

When I was starting this up and checking the language options there was only English available. Then I recalled that was thing here, everyone speaks English. Then I was like, “is Quentin Tarantino in this this?!” and yep he’s in the opening scene.

There’s some fun stuff in this pastiche of previous films but the decision to go all English was ill advised. A lot of the time it never feels natural; the actors learned the lines phonetically and say them rather than speak them. If they were speaking Japanese the entire film would flow better.
