Viewing Notes

Remarkable film for being an above average late period noir but also an early horror-adjacent spooky psychological thriller that likely informed serial killer films, giallo and gritty crime flicks that would dominate the seventies. Many subsequent films came to mind while viewing this. Ofc all the on location shooting in San Francisco recalled all the other great SF movies. Love this one bc of how it captures this precise year. There’s a sequence at a Giants / Dodgers game that occurs at 8:15pm* on August 18, 1961 (ticket was $2.36 + $.14 tax for $2.50 for a pretty good seat). Really enjoy little details like that. This transfer on Tubi looks amazing which means it’s likely the new restoration that Indicator released. Now I wanna own this.

*how in the world did they start west coast games so late? Probably not getting home until midnight. But it was a Friday so maybe that’s fine and good for the bar business, which we also get to see in this movie.
