Viewing Notes

Craving more Francis Lam fantasy action flicks I fired this one up on Tubi. The TMBd description was all gobbledygook taken from a poor English translation from the original source novel. So I rewrote this description and updated the cast. Still trying to figure out which character Yu Sichu is (I don’t think she’s either of the female Demon Warriors but could be wrong there given her martial arts background).

The movie is a wild cornball ride thru this fantasy story about the evil eye that King Asura secures in his body but has this other goal of collecting all seven magic swords to rule the martial world. There’s so much plotting and story beats I wondered if this movie was a condensed tv series (couldn’t find any evidence to support that).

There’s so much backstory and new reveals that you just have to go along with it. I do wish these films (there’s at least 3 films in this series) would get a DVD or Blu release so I could revisit with better subtitles. I love these kinds of movies but there’s a lot to digest. There’s a witch doctor / medicine man not listed in the credits here called Dr Ghost Hands. All his scenes are great. Big fan of Chen Jie as Liu Yufang. Tough as nails and very pretty but what I only learned by researching this movie series, she was 39yo (!!!) when this movie was released—she looks like she’s maybe 27 or 28yo in this movie. It was confusing bc of her character’s backstory and I’m like, “how is that possible bc she’s only a 20-something.” Her RL age explains it.

Anyways this is a super fun super corny wuxia flick and now I’m gonna watch the sequel.
