So much I wanna say about this movie… was curious about the release year discrepancy bc it’s a 4 year difference. 2016 is the release year but this film screened at festivals in 2012.
I don’t understand the overarching story of the movie other than certain plot points. I held off viewing after not being crazy about Sword Identity which #ActionTwitter raves about. Saw a tweet the other day that expressed confusion yet fascination with Judge Archer so I fired it up. Definitely a singular vision by Xu Haofeng, which is no surprise looking at his Final Master (still my favorite of his).
I just don’t know what to make of this other than I like it and his style. Again certain aspects feel out of period and unusual that have me feeling off balance. Like there’s no certain path to expect. The Tubi stream looked amazing and the subs were great. I hope there’s a Blu-ray release.
One last note: how did American Yenny Martin get cast as a primary character in this movie?! I love her in this but she was in college during this production and this is her only film role. Now she’s a digital content manager. (Yes, I stalked her LinkedIn page) I really need to know the story of her involvement in this movie bc she’s great in this but never pursued more acting afterwards? Huh
