This is the Japanese Shallow Hal or something like it. On one hand I totally get what the intent is, “be true to yourself” “be happy in your own body” yada yada but then the movie goes on to show how society truly feels about people they deem unworthy or ugly or whatever. Plus the wish fulfillment premise is a bit much. Guessing these are the reasons this has a middling rating.
But I like the cast including Keiko Kitagawa who still looks like her Sailor Mars days and the supporting Hiroyuki Ikeuchi who’s gone on to many cool roles. Ofc Mayumi Sada always has me thinking of her tokusatsu appearances. S/O to my boy Shosuke Tanihara, my favorite from Godzilla vs Megaguirus.
Although I’m sure Yumi would not like this movie she might have enjoyed seeing the main character in a San Jose State sweatshirt.
