My final film for JFF 2024 and was worried it was gonna end on a down note. Glad I was wrong bc this is quite funny at times despite the heavy premise. To be fair it does start v serious with the news of Mariko’s apparent suicide (literally the opening scene). Her best friend then goes on a journey to reconcile her complicated feelings for her longtime friend.
Not really a comedy but perhaps dark comedy bc there is humor but juxtaposed with the grief. It’s a good movie and Mei Nagano is excellent carrying the entire film on her back. Great to see Masataka Kubota again and in another “savior” role. Was concerned when I saw him in the cast that he was one of the awful men that abused Mariko. I kinda hope he always takes roles like this, reluctant hero stuff.
