Viewing Notes

So glad I remembered to bring my earplugs!

This movie is a trip. Three hour amalgam of a dozens other films. Phantom Menace, Dune, Chronicles of Riddick, Creator, and plenty of 90s post-apocalyptic films like Fist of the North Star and The Guyver. And a dozen+ other movies. It’s a wild mashup with a “chosen one” throughline but also steeped in Indian legend and folklore. Very ambitious and often corny at times but I give it a lot of credit for pulling it all together and making an entertaining epic adventure.

Always nice seeing Deepika Padukone again and here she’s the central figure but doesn’t get much to do other than being a damsel in distress most of the time, which is too bad bc we’ve seen her kick ass in other films. Disha Patani appears for a hot minute and had she stuck around would’ve stolen all the heat from Deepika. Wowza she is something.

Amitabh Bachchan still has it and super fun to see him in a primary role being a badass even if it wasn’t really him doing all the action. He is 81 after all but I clapped when he first appears. Prabhas has the right amount of swagger and machismo to be the lead anti-hero, which reminds me that we need to do Bahubali for movie night.

Overall a fun flick that wears its influences on its sleeve and doesn’t try to hide from them. Also I got a strong 90s anime vibe esp. towards the end w/the superboss. Reminded me of Japanese Super Fanicom platformers that were ported over for SNES and Sega Genesis that had some huge disgusting boss at the end.
