Viewing Notes

(Was) Seated in a near soldout screening (was only 3 open seats when I reserved mine). Also was the only non-Chinese person in my screening. I get why my showing was nearly soldout; this is a crowdpleaser and my audience ate it up. Laughs and more laughs. It’s fun and funny and certainly leans into the culture, which is a lot of why my crowd was losing their shit.

Shen Teng and Ma Li must be Chinese film royalty by this point. Third film for each that I have seen this year. They are good in this and make it work. The description here doesn’t really convey the story or the comedy of it. In fact, the description looks like some nonsense a translator app spit out from a Chinese website. Here’s the premise:

Shen Teng and Ma Li are the billionaire parents who want to raise their youngest son in poverty so he will grow up to have the values and skills needed to take over the family fortune and run the corporation. So these two and a huge cast of employees carry on this illusion for years. So you can see where the humor comes in as everyone is trying to keep the secret while raising this boy.
