Viewing Notes

aka Eternal Zero, a much better title and the title of the tv series.

More to say on this but clear as to why Takashi Yamazaki was selected by Toho to direct Godzilla Minus One.

This movie is like a companion piece for Godzilla Minus One. Def adjacent. But doesn’t work as a prequel or sequel given the story of this zero fighter pilot and his reputation after the war. I like that it’s a modern day story told in flashbacks to the war. Like GMO some incredible VFX given the likely very small budget.

If this were available on Blu-ray I’d buy it. I like the story and cast a lot. Nice to see Kazue Fukiishi here. Completely forgot that Junichi Okada, the main character of this movie as the zero pilot, went on to be The Fable. He looks so different here. Also neat to see Mao Inoue in an adult role; I’m only used to seeing her in the Boys Over Flowers J-drama.

When I first saw Shota Sometani in the film I was just happy to see his face not realizing he would become one of the central figures of the story. Surprised he’s credited lower than the others. Anyways, he’s great in this. Both he and Mao are like the proto-main characters in Godzilla Minus One.
