Viewing Notes

Perhaps due to my low expectations I ended up mostly enjoying this. It’s riddling with all the signs of studio meddling and poor screenwriting, reshoots notwithstanding. But it has a capable cast led by Blanchett who seems to really give a shit despite the material (and she looks amazing as usual). She and Jack Black must like Eli Roth after working with him on House with a Clock, which I like a lot. Also the costume design is excellent. Def put some money into that to look like characters from the games.

Probably the biggest misfire is trying to make this hyper violent video game into a YA 4 quadrant crowdpleaser. Big mistake (that was the approach for House with a Clock, which makes more sense). Should’ve leaned hard into the R-rated feel of the video game and made a super violent, gory yet comedic movie set in this world. And write a better screenplay and ditch the ending, which totally lost me.
