Today we received the awful news of Corey Yuen’s passing… two years ago. Instead of firing up an easy go-to classic to celebrate his life, I chose one of his not-so-great films that I haven’t seen in a long time. Yeah this one is not good and shows that even one of the best to ever do wasn’t always perfect. This does have its moments but is weighed down by the poor digital FX of that time along with the goofy story. This movie has a lot in common with STREET FIGHTER, MORTAL KOMBAT 2, and BLACK MASK 2. Reminds me of all those and is either as bad or worse.
This is one of the HK brat pack movies (lumped together with Gen-X Cops, Twins Effect, etc.). All these young faces in lead roles with the old guard in supporting roles. It’s not a good movie but I would 100 percent buy this movie on blu-ray if a good release were to happen (it should simply for the cast and Yuen).
So it was cool to see that even a master like Corey Yuen was capable of making some silly shit (not unlike his peers). I will tackle some of his better films in the coming days / weeks.
RIP Corey Yuen, 1951 - 2022
An absolute giant both onscreen and behind the camera
