“Introducing Philip Ng”*
This is my new (second) favorite movie of the year. Good god is it so dumb in so many ways. A scene set in 1980 features a Sony Trinitron television, an Audi SUV with a ‘95 vehicle sticker, and assorted other things. The movie is set in 1995 (both years are inexplicable to the story they are telling… like, why not just set it in 2012??). In 1995 they are using modern THIN laptops with full internet access. It’s incredible.
Despite being written by Wong Jing, this is not a sequel to his Naked Weapon yet they cast a lead (Nicholas Tse’s sister Jennifer) who looks remarkably similar to Maggie Q. The story is familiar, however, with young girls being groomed into grown up assassins. And the action is pretty fun. The dubbing is atrocious but adds to the entertainment value. I was laughing almost the entire runtime.
We also get the great Sammo Hung in dad mode plus a good guy Andy On, who I must say isn’t nearly as fun as his villain turns. There’s also a basketball scene where all the Chinese guys are wearing Ohio State jerseys for some reason (it’s clear they are not in Columbus, Ohio). This movie really delivers in so many ways I cannot get over how incredible it is.
I sincerely hope and pray I can find this on Blu-ray for a future movie night.
*Philip Ng was in several films before this one so I’m not sure why they did this unless perhaps this was his first major role, which tbh is not a major role. but he’s still fun with his cyberpunk hair.
