Overview

Shy and looking for love, Mark quickly becomes smitten with the outgoing and mysterious Ash, who somehow, much to his surprise, reciprocates the attraction. But as his feelings for her intensify, so does his unexpected submersion into Ash’s biggest love: the wild world of mukbanging. And with it, lots of bloodshed. Delving into a fascinating subculture while never losing focus on her characters, first-timer Aimee Kuge delivers a raucous and bold horror-comedy seeped in romance and gore.

Viewing Notes

I love this movie which may end up on my top ten this year. The director Aimee Kuge is U of Colorado film program alumni and was there to introduce the movie and do a Q&A afterwards. A familiar story with a real deal manic pixie dream girl portrayed perfectly by April Consalo who falls for the dopey leading man (Nate Wise), an amalgamation of Seth Rogen and Mark Ruffalo. It captures that awkward early courting phase that turns toxic yet co-dependent and cannibalistic.

Super fun, funny and sexy. Made on a micro-budget and looks amazing with a variety of cameras, lens, and film. One of the better Q&As, too, probably bc most of the audience were film students and had a genuine interest in how this movie was made. Kuge referenced JENNIFER’S BODY and Fessenden’s HABIT as inspirations (and cited her love of Henenlotter for a specific term of endearment used in the movie). She mentioned it has been picked up for physical media release next year; this movie very much feels like a title for a label under the OCN banner (VinSyn or Deaf Crocodile, perhaps).

Highly recommended and one of the best new-to-me movies I watched for this year’s 31 Days of Horror.

Free screening at CU Boulder as part of the International Film Series
