I don’t get the hate for this one! WTF do ppl want from these movies directed by Xu Haofeng. This is another hyper-stylized approach to that period with some obvious anachronistic elements (music, design, style, etc.). Has a lot in common with his THE FINAL MASTER but not nearly the same amount of sensuality (sexuality?) of that one. This movie flirts with it between the primary characters and teeters on wanting to lean into it.
The fighting is excellent and the premise is goofy as hell, which is why I love it.
“In this society, women can not be leaders…” paraphrasing but yeah it’s shitty then and shitty now.
And while we’re at it, let’s get Tang Shiyi out of tv work and give her her own movie already. She nearly steals the movie with her epic fight.
