35mm presentation part of the 9 Days of ’90s Celebration courtesy of International Film Series at University of Colorado - Boulder
Incredible to see this on the big screen for the first time and on 35mm!
It’s been at least 20 years since I’ve seen this so it was circled on the IFS calendar as a can’t miss. The movie is so over the top and ridiculous but Travolta and Cage make it work. They are so very good. When the Jason asked the audience who was seeing this for the first time, almost the entire group raised their hands, which is not surprising since most are students. Such a blast to watch with a bunch of first-timers and another reason why I love seeing movies like this at CU Boulder. Super fun viewing with a crowd.
One thing that stood out that I wouldn’t have noticed 20+ years ago is how much the first third of the movie looks like the Hong Kong films produced in the early to mid-90s. Then it starts to move into a more traditional looking Hollywood actioner with all the usual John Woo hallmarks and flourishes. The entire finale with the chain of explosions during a speed boat chase (!!) is the perfect banana pants sequence to close the movie.
“Dad, I’m sorry I shot you.” big LOL from the crowd
