Viewing Notes

A lost giallo that was uploaded to YouTube with some nice background information on the film including the accurate runtime of 72 minutes. They redid did the subtitles as well. The transfer isn’t great even viewing on a smaller screen via my laptop but it was watchable.

Not a great giallo but def falls into that erotic thriller category with this guy and his relationships with these woman; who is blackmailing who? According to the notes it wasn’t written as a giallo mystery but since that was hot at the time the story was reconfigured.

This is totally the kind of film you’d expect to see in a Forgotten Gialli release so I wouldn’t be surprised if it shows up eventually.

Since it was still open on my laptop, here’s the film info from YT, which I think is some great context:

Istantanea per un delitto (1975) was apparently started in 1970 by documentary director Ezio Alovisi as a marital drama but was substantially rewritten by producer Mario Imperoli after the success of Bird with the Crystal Plumage to make it more in line with the giallo fad, including writing a new role for and casting Erna Schurer (according to Roberto Curti’s Itallian Giallo in Film and Television) as a scheming love interest. Alovisi quit and Imeroli took over in 1974 to complete it. Credited to Arthur Saxon, it stars Erna Schurer, Monica Strebel, and Luis La Torre and has a very cool score by Franco Bixio. This film never had a decent English-friendly release. This is a revised version for giallo enthusiasts out there with much improved English subtitles (hard-subbed here).

Film copies tropes from the bikinis-on-a-boat trend of early gialli more prevalent in the late ‘60s with Top Sensation (1969), Interrabang (1969), and The Sex of Angels (1968) in which young people live the good life partying and criming casually - and then a body turns up. Also has strong influence from Blow-up (photographer filming something he wasn’t supposed to) and has an elliptical structure to keep motives hidden and us guessing. Our hero is trying to pull one over on the girls, but it becomes clear they’re putting one over on him. Clever ending sequences in which we see the “same” conversations from different person’s perspective.

This film was fan-subbed by user Mogweezer for Cinemageddon some time ago (thanks for the effort!) and those were the only Eng subs available. I’ve used these as my starting point and tracked down the Italian DVD, translated those Italian subs to English, and tweaked them, revising syntax mistakes, filling in missing lines as best as my limited Italian and translating skills allow, and all re-timed them to this version, which is also a slight visual upgrade from the OOP dvd.
