Interesting choice to take the franchise back in time to the turn of the century then get heavy handed with the Chinese Exclusion Act history yet still be a murder mystery and retain the humor. It doesn’t really work in this context compared to the previous installments.
I do like old timey Chinatown in San Francisco shot entirely on one of those enormous backlots in Beijing. Looks amazing. Great to see Chow Yun-Fat in a meaty supporting role. The rest is merely okay. Seeing John Cusack overacting is amusing but I prefer this franchise set in modern day.
