Viewing Notes

After the “Oh Yoko” short film (music video) this one was teed up next; definitely more risqué in content yet still playful like his pop art of the seventies. Reminds me of Monty Python (the tv show). I threw together a basic poster for TMDb and added a description from this passage:

“Madonna” (2005) is a short animated film by Japanese artist and experimental filmmaker Keiichi Tanaami. Known for his psychedelic and surreal visual style, Tanaami creates a vibrant, chaotic, and dreamlike world filled with bold colors, distorted imagery, and rapid motion.

In Madonna, Tanaami employs his signature collage-style animation, combining pop art influences, retro aesthetics, and surrealistic motifs. The film explores themes of desire, fantasy, and memory, often referencing elements of post-war Japanese culture and American pop culture. The visuals are layered with intense, hallucinatory sequences, evoking a sensory overload reminiscent of 1960s psychedelia.

Tanaami’s work frequently reflects his personal experiences, including childhood memories of World War II bombings, comic book art, and eroticism. Madonna is no exception, delivering an abstract yet hypnotic visual experience that challenges conventional storytelling and immerses viewers in a bizarre, pulsating dreamscape.

I wanted to rewatch Yellow Submarine after seeing “Oh Yoko” and TIL that the Blu is OOP and goes for $$$ which makes me sad. I may just buy a DVD. How does a film by arguably the biggest R&R band ever go OOP?
