This had a lot of hype when it hit Netflix on release. Has it really been 5 years??!!? Wow, time flies. I didn’t view it then but it bubbled up occasionally over the years in the same “best K-action ever” convos. Now having finally watched it, again I am mystified by #ActionTwitter. Firstly, this is barely an action movie. Sure, there’s some bursts here and there but when your main characters aren’t even skilled, I find it a stretch to call the action “good” despite how thrilling it might be (akin to calling Blue Ruin a good action movie).
But as a “dumbshit young people making bad decisions and getting hunted by the mob” movie* it’s a fairly electric thrill ride. At times it has a horror vibe which got me the most. Genuine chills and scares. That said, it does the thing that I dislike: makes the viewer root for these dopes who put themselves in this situation. As soon as these four dummies commit to the robbery, my first thought (to quote the Red Queen), “You’re all going to die down here.”
I like the movie and it looks great some really nice camera work and photography. Def could’ve done w/o the epilogue. No need to drag it out. We get it.
* the second K-movie I watched in two days with the same premise (last night was Derailed).
