Trailblazing double bassist Orin O’Brien never wanted the spotlight, but when Leonard Bernstein hired her in 1966 as the first female musician in the New York Philarmonic, it was inevitable that she would become the focus of much interest and fascination. Now 87 years old and recently retired, Orin looks back on her remarkable life and career, insisting that a fuss should not be made, much preferring to play a supporting role to the family, students, friends, and colleagues that surround her.

On my way home I was listening to a podcast ep talk about this short film that won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film and that it was available on Netflix. So I spun it up as soon as I got home ~10:15pm. If this won the award how average were the rest of the nominees?
This is totally fine. A nice look at this woman and her life and her accomplishments. It’s just that, nothing more. Congrats to her and her daughter, who directed and produced the film. I don’t think this would’ve have won in most years but now I am curious to see the remaining nominees in this category. The Academy should make all the short films immediately available when the ceremony is over.
