Viewing Notes

Better than I expected and ofc now I want to watch all the movies discussed. (see the list I created)

This was a mini-series but was reformatted for a (long) feature length documentary. The description here isn’t entirely accurate; the focus is only on the movies released in 1982 then if there were tie-ins for video games, tv or other pop culture then it is discussed (E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is the perfect example—they talk about the video game, the toys, and more related to the movie release).

The first two thirds are pretty great as they spend time with each of the main “geek” films of the year. Good BTS stories and history (hearing Nicholas Meyer talk about the directing decisions and story decisions on Wrath of Khan was particularly illuminating; fandom wasn’t any different then it’s just more pronounced today w/social media and the internet). The last quarter the doc veers into general movie talk, box office, Academy Awards so a lot of films are mentioned esp. Gandhi, which one the Oscar for best picture that year.

Def an interesting selection of talking heads, too. The main reason why I watched this was bc I heard my buddy Stephen Scarlata was on it. Great to see him as he knows his history. Brea Grant was neat to see but an odd choice as she’s not exactly “popular” compared to Dee Wallace and Adrienne Barbeau, both featured and totally make sense for this doc. Funny they got Paul Schrader. I’m sure they tried to get the bigger names (Ridley Scott, Spielberg, Kurt Russell, etc) but were shut down.

Overall a fun documentary to fill the Sunday afternoon and got me inspired to create the list off all the movies mentioned in the doc. I added some extras to get to a nice 100 even number.
