For over 40 years Val Kilmer, one of Hollywood’s most mercurial and/or misunderstood actors has been documenting his own life and craft through film and video. He has amassed thousands of hours of footage, from 16mm home movies made with his brothers, to time spent in iconic roles for blockbuster movies like Top Gun, The Doors, Tombstone, and Batman Forever. This raw, wildly original and unflinching documentary reveals a life lived to extremes and a heart-filled, sometimes hilarious look at what it means to be an artist and a complex man.

RIP Val Kilmer
December 31, 1959—April 1, 2025
Learned a lot about this beautiful man and the struggles he faced throughout his career. Crazy this was produced prior to the pandemic ~2019 I’m guessing given the 2021 release date. Val was in bad shape then so he must’ve really been suffering in these more recent years despite keeping up a good spirited presence on socials. All the respect to Tom Cruise for having Val in TG: Maverick.
Would’ve been a tough viewing before he passed but incredibly poignant now only day after his death. Oddly feels like he was preparing for this moment, a few scenes really are a gut punch.
But this doc really captures Kilmer and his life, his family, his career all from thousands of hours of home video recordings, which I never knew he did or was a home video aficionado. Some insane footage of him and others from back in the day. All the footage of him on the Dr. Moreau set is nuts. Worth viewing just to see that and these actors so early in their career. Was very cool that Joanne Whalley is included here.
