First feature film by this director… you can tell. Some stiff acting, even by veterans like Kara Wai, and some scenes / ideas that probably sounded better on the page (the auction sequence is def one of those). But having Wai carry the film is a good move bc she understands the emotional heft required to make this exorcism story believable.
Sadly, the version on Peacock is poorly English dubbed and a major distraction. Just awful and cartoonish sounding, which mixed w/the often wooden acting really made this an unpleasant viewing. Good thing I really, really like Kara Wai. If there was a Mandarin language version available I would give this another shot.
