Viewing Notes

Amazing that Lau Kar-Leung directed two sequels for Drunken Master that share the same release year and have nothing to do with each other. My guess is that the studio forced the DM3 title on this to leverage the popularity of the Jackie Chan sequel. He’s not in this one and the closest to him would be Andy Lau who’s MIA for half the movie. Gordon Liu is still in his villain mode here (I would love to read a long form essay on how Liu went from hero to heel during the eighties). The action is great but everything around it is not.

Michelle Reis is radiant and gorgeous. The Lau vs Liu stuff is fun. All the anachronistic nonsense (halloween, skateboarding, etc.) isn’t as novel as Leung probably thought it would be at the time. The religious subplot is a turnoff.

All that said, I’d still like to have a nice release of this.
