even with low expectations I was bored for most of the movie. def picks up in the final act but everything before that did not work for me. hated shoehorning in the family for no other reason than to echo the first JP movie. Completely inconsequential to the story, which is so annoying bc everything they experience (the river raft sequence) could’ve just been placed on the mercs.
A much better way to include the family is start with the family going on a trip, why it’s important, how they will avoid dinos, etc. Then they encounter the mosasaurus and get rescued by the mercs. Then, organically, they learn about the mission and get roped into joining them for the rest of the movie. why is this so hard for the screenwriters to get right? It’s like they really wanted to punch home how society bores of things like dinosaurs so quickly, an exhausted allegory already but they totally abandon it anyways.
The entire front end in NYC is so clunky and heavy handed. Hate it. Hate the mission, another “they have the cure to [enter some uncurable disease]” premise. Also going full kaiju with the D-rex is so dumb. But hated the family the most.
