Koichi Sakamoto makes movies I like. Ninja vs Shark. Black Fox. Kamen Rider. I hope this one gets a Blu-ray release.
This one is great bc it features four (4!) badass women. incl. my favorite psychopath Kanon Miyahara. she’s in my top 5 working actors in Japan that I really want to meet. She’s a lunatic and I love her.
Another very cool thing is all these badass women doing their own fighting. I know they train hard to be convincing and they are. Some really nice action direction, too.
I like that Sakamoto leans into the taboo of gay relationships, esp. between the Shogun and his sparing partner. Nice to see this openly presented here.
This is totally a movie that at one point in his career, would’ve featured Tak Sakaguchi. I’m sad he doesn’t take this work anymore bc he’d be a welcome addition, probably as the Yagyu clan leader. He’s worked with one of the leads Himena Tsukimiya twice in both Rise of Machine Girls and Red Blade. So he has done this type of work but I think he’s retired.
