Viewing Notes

Herman Yau doesn’t pull any punches in movies. No exception here. Good looking movie (looks great on Amazon Prime) that covers all too familiar ground; Triad brothers forge their own path in different directions only to collide into each other years later.

Andy Lau and Louis Koo both look great. Lau in particular because I think he’s supposed to be 18-20 years younger here than his RL age. And he looks it! I need his secret formula.

Like with many of Yau’s films, everything is building towards some insane setpiece. This def has it but I don’t think it earns it. The front two thirds is so crammed with subplots that really don’t matter by the end. For a very retread story like this, just lean on the actors to make it work. As great as both Koo and Lau are they just don’t get enough good material to carry the story.

It is great to see a Chinese movie filmed in Hong Kong.
